Latinos in Heritage Conservation Receives $4 Million Grant from Andrew  W. Mellon Foundation to Advance Latinx Heritage Preservation

Funding Will Support Organizational Growth and Key Initiatives

NATIONAL, September 4, 2024—Latinos in Heritage Conservation (LHC), a 501c3  nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving Latinx places, stories and cultural heritage  across the Nation, announced receiving a $4 million grant from the Andrew W. Mellon  Foundation in partnership with the Social Impact Fund. The grant will support LHC’s efforts  to expand organizational capacity, strengthen their Abuelas Project, develop a Latinx  preservation toolkit for the Borderlands region, and establish a regranting program to  steward Latinx heritage sites.

“We are deeply grateful to the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for this generous grant, which  will enable us to expand our work to preserve and protect Latinx heritage significantly,”  said Sehila Mota Casper, executive director of Latinos in Heritage Conservation. “This  funding enables us to greatly expand our reach and impact, ensuring that Latinx heritage is  recognized, protected and celebrated.”

The grant will be distributed over three years and will support the following initiatives:

  • Establishment of a Regranting Program: LHC is introducing a new grant program  that will provide $600,000 in annual funding over three years to help support Latinx  nonprofits across the Nation.

  • Expansion of the Abuelas Project: The Abuelas Project will extend its reach into  the United States-Mexico Borderlands region.

  • Development of a United States-Mexico Borderlands Latinx Preservation  Toolkit: LHC will create a toolkit to provide resources and guidance to communities  and organizations working to preserve Latinx heritage along the historic region.

  • Organizational Capacity Building: LHC will invest in staff and leadership  development to enhance its ability to deliver programs and services nationwide.

“This grant is a major milestone for Latinos in Heritage Conservation,” said Desiree  Aranda, LHC board chair. “It will allow us to make a lasting impact on preserving Latinx  heritage for generations to come.”
