Tucson, AZ, February 17, 2022 – Latinos in Heritage Conservation (LHC) and its partner Historic Denver will host Congreso, the nonprofit’s signature conference explicitly focused on Latinx heritage conservation. The multi-day event will take place this year in Denver, Colorado, April 28-30.

Keynote speakers include the Honorable Ken Salazar, U.S. Ambassador to Mexico and former Secretary of the Interior; Congressman Raúl M. Grijalva of Arizona, Chair of the House Natural Resources Committee; Congresswoman Teresa Leger Fernández from New Mexico; and David Vela, former Acting Director of the National Park Service.

Congreso 2022 is the first conference of its kind held in the Intermountain Region. Over three days, presenters and attendees will discuss current and ongoing efforts to preserve and protect Latinx heritage, including cultural district programs, innovative historic documentation methods, advocacy strategies, and best practices on inclusion.

This lively forum aims to celebrate and expand knowledge of Latinx heritage resource studies while strengthening efforts to honor and conserve Latinx history for future generations at the regional and national scale. “We at LHC believe that historic preservation practice in the U.S. should be accessible, more inclusive, and reflective of its people,” says Sehila Mota-Casper, Congreso committee chairperson.

To take steps towards building a culturally and geographically diverse movement for all American Latinxs, conference sessions will highlight and examine Latinx historical presence, 20th-century urban history, contributions to American democracy, Sacred Indigenous sites, and cultural landscapes, among others.

Scholarship Opportunities

Students and local leaders from historically underrepresented and excluded backgrounds in the heritage field are encouraged to apply for Congreso scholarships which cover full registration and provide a stipend for travel-related expenses, where applicable. Scholarship applications are due Friday, February 25, 2022, at 11:59 PM CST.

Interested parties are invited to join LHC and Historic Denver for Congreso to explore multiple perspectives and ignite the next wave of Latinx heritage.
